While the UNSC itself may not be talking about what was discussed, Caribbean nations under CARICOM did issue a statement and said,
"CARICOM reiterates its commitment to the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace and the maintenance of international law.
"Consequently, CARICOM calls for a de-escalation of the conflict and an appropriate dialogue between the leaders of Venezuela and Guyana to ensure peaceful coexistence, the application and respect of international law and to avoid the use or threat of force."
After signing six Presidential decrees cementing the annexation into place, Maduro also called for dialog with ExxonMobil and Guyana. "Guyana and ExxonMobil will have to sit down with us face-to-face sooner rather than later," Maduro said yesterday during a ceremony at the Miraflores presidential palace.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, "We call on the parties to refrain from any actions that could unbalance the situation and cause mutual harm."
Predictably, the U.S. response was to hold military drills with Guyana's feeble armed forces.
Maduro can't back down from the annexation without losing the support of his base and tiny but rich Guyana has made it clear that it will never cede territory. Guyanese Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said Venezuela "is not going to succeed, now or ever" at seizing the region.
The sizable region of Essequibo region originally belonged to Venezuela but was taken by Britain and made part of its British Guiana colony through a rigged international tribunal in 1899. Attempts to resolve the issue through international arbitration has failed.
Because the Essequibo holds enormous wealth in oil, gold and diamonds which Guyana is now financially dependent upon, it will not give it up without a fight.
Because ExxonMobil is earning massive profits from that oil, it will use the U.S. military might it controls to protect those profits. However, it also may not care which nation is pays the meagre royalties to, as long as it can continue to loot the oil.
As a nation of war, the U.S. would normally not hesitate to use its military might to enforce Guyana's claim over Essequibo, but this situation is complicated by America's war on Russia through Ukraine, its unconditional support of Israel's genocide on Palestine and its commitments in the Western Pacific to prevent China from taking Taiwan and grabbing more territory from its other neighbors.
It is possible that Maduro has the backing of China and Russia and the U.S. is being provoked into an armed conflict it can't win in order to distract it from Ukraine and Taiwan.
The next move is up to criminally insane Team-Biden and their oligarch masters.
