FLTFA allows agencies to use revenues from the sale of public lands identified for disposal to purchase nominated lands with high conservation or recreation value.
Through FLTFA, landowners with parcels adjacent to federal lands managed by participating agencies in 12 western states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) may nominate those lands for government purchase if they:
- Contain exceptional resources;
- Connect to wilderness study areas or the National Forest, Park, Trails, Wildlife Refuge, or Wild and Scenic Rivers systems; or
- Consist of at least 640 contiguous acres and would enable public access to federal lands open to public recreational activities for which there is currently no, or restricted, public access.
Participating agencies will prioritize nominated parcels for potential government acquisition using funds collected from the sale or exchange of public lands.
